To each his own of course, but from my point of view I think you're selling early 90:s UK R&B way too short. While a lot of American R&B felt kinda tired in the early 90:s, there were a lot of fresh and creative voices coming from the UK at that time. Think Young Disciples and their masterpiecce "Road to Freedom". Of course, the songs that might've ended up on the charts might've been more "middle of the road", but speaking of roads, that Shara Nelson song ended up on the quite majestic album "What Silence Knows". The title track still gives me goosebumps.
Just wanted to give 90:s UK soul / R&B some props as it formed an important part of my musical soundtrack as a teenager. Your milage may, of course, vary. :-)
I saw The Smashing Pumpkins in 1998 in Philadelphia. After the opening track Billy announced: "Ladies and Gentlemen... we are Pearl Jam"! Classic Billy. If I recall correctly, in my teen scene in the early 90s it was Verboten to be a fan of both bands. I've always liked him, partly because it seemed he was cool with being disliked. Hard disagree on 'Disarm'. That's a top five 90s alt rock song. I dare say 'Today' is in there as well.

Lol...love that analysis of the Pumpkins. DIAL BACK THE BILLY! My new catchphrase!
I had completely forgotten about that Madonna song. It's really nice.
